SEASON 9
The Birmingham Fury 8th year in the league, they wanted to improve from a 43 – 37 record in season 8 and their goal was to reach the Division Championship, but the opposite happen and they finished 5th in the Mid-Atlantic Division. The Fury had many problems in season 9 one of hem was that they averaged 104.3 points per game, but gave up 107.0 points per game. They also had problems in the foul disparity. The Fury attempted 1091 free throws while making 842, but their opponents attempted 2913 free throws while making 2243. That is a difference of 1401 points just from the free throw line. With that being said as a team they averaged 27.7 fouls per game. This is the downfall of the Fury.
At the beginning of the season the Fury made one trade with Utah giving the #45 in season 9 draft and also Birmingham’s season 13th first round. In return the Fury received Leonel Coles. In the draft the Fury only had one pick # 47 and they took Jake Theivakumara. The projected starting five: PG — Oliver McCarty, he worked really hard in the off season improving his all-arounnd game he is now the leader of this team. SG — Nike Johnson, His main hold up was his health, but with the great trainer and training program the fury has that should not be a problem anymore. SF — Bill Blackstone, This crafty old veteran is still here and trying to get back to his high power offense and put up big numbers. PF — Bob Delaney, This player does it all for this team, and every year he gets left off of the all-star team. C — Ramiro Watts, He worked on his conditioning in the off season and now hopes to produce. Key Bench Players: SG/SF– Frank Rose, he can score and can put up big number at any given time. PF/C — Leonel Coles, the Fury Coach, Ethan Kight was very excited about this pick in the off season. SF/PF — Craig King, The things he brings to the team is immeasurable. (Keyword toughness.)
After a slow start, the once playoff conference final team now just another team in the bottom of the Eastern Conference was on their longest losing streak of the season. Ethan made the trade that almost turned their season around and them making the playoffs. Birmingham received in the trade PG — Yuri Vilasny, PG/SG — Michael Kutak and Omaha 13th season 1st. The trade didn’t come easy they had to give up their team leader PG — Oliver McCarty, SG/SF — Frank Rose, and Omaha’s 11th season 2nd. After trading Frank Rose for Michael Kutak, the team has not found their games yet. The one bright spot on the Fury in Yuri Vilasny, he is averaging 14 assists since coming to the Fury. When asked Yuri reported, “Things are just easier for me here. I am surrounded by great players if we could just keep them on the court.”
The next problem was the indecisive of the Management side of this organization about the team’s future in Birmingham. Ethan James Kight has talked with the city of Birmingham’s city council and the new plans about building a new arena. The two sides have sat down and discussed the topic about building the arena, but to no result. The building pan has been placed on hold until after the season.
In the mean time EJK has began talks with the country of Finland. The community and the country as a whole are really excited about the possibility of the Fury coming to Finland. With the problems on the court and even more problems off the court the Fury franchise was in a lot of turmoil. What all of this going on and the only bright spot the Fury had playing for them on the court was Yuri Vilasny and he was hurt in the game on Day 39 between Boston & Birmingham. After dishing out 19 assists and he missed 18 games. With Vilasny being out and Coach Kight having a mental break down with all the problems they were just too much for the Fury to over come.
With that being said the Fury finished the season with a 29 – 51 with a winning % 0f 0.363. Their record at home was 23 – 17, but on the road they were 6 – 34. The Fury declined in wins by 14 games from the previous season of 43 – 37, with that record they finished 5th in the Mid-Atlantic Division and 12th in the Eastern Conference.
